Paying a visit to the past is the same as paying a visit to those who are no longer alive. Death is death and that’s what happens when you focus on past disappointments or failures. 

Previous incarnations of oneself are “past versions” and frequently obstruct growth. Visiting your past might be beneficial if it enables you to grow as a person in the present; otherwise, it will almost definitely set you back.

If you have to live in the past, at the very least try to remember the good times rather than the bad.
