You don’t need an ashram or silent meditation retreat to practice mindfulness. It can be cultivated informally by bringing mindful awareness to ordinary activities like brushing your teeth, washing dishes, or going for a walk. Notice the sensations of the water, the movement of your limbs, the sights and sounds around you. Examine even simple experiences with childlike interest.

Mindfulness teaches us that our thoughts and emotions are often distorted by past conditioning and habits. By inquiring into them through the lens of the present moment, we gain perspective and can learn to relate to even painful feelings with wisdom and compassion rather than reactivity.
