Popsicle Inventor Frank Epperson with Granddaughter

16 Mar 1973, San Francisco, California, USA — Popsicle inventor Frank Epperson, 78, and granddaughter Nancy Epperson, 5, celebrate the 50th anniversary of his invention with, of course, a Popsicle! Epperson, a retired real estate man, patented his “frozen drink on a stick” idea in 1923. He sold his royalty rights after the stock market crash in 1929 because he needed cash for his real estate ventures. Today, nine billion Popsicle-type products are sold in the U.S. each year. Orange has always been, and still is, the favorite flavor. — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
